It is 3pm in the North Carolina Piedmont, and a scorching 97 degrees outside. Inside, our house is 71 degrees with no use of air conditioning. Our electric bill just arrived: it cost $24.57 to power our house, horse barn and the pastureÍs hot wire for the last 33 days. –Kathleen Jardine

It is 101degrees here in scorching, drought-stricken Carolina. Our house is a cool 74 degrees with no airconditioning, though the ceiling fans spin pleasantly.
